Gentle Somatic Yoga to Release Stored Emotions and Trauma
A Healing Practice for Nervous System Support & Emotional Freedom
Have you ever felt emotions stuck in your body—like tension in your chest, a lump in your throat, or tightness in your hips that just won’t go away?
These aren’t just physical sensations… they’re emotional imprints.
And somatic yoga can help you release them—gently, safely, and compassionately.
In this post, I’ll share what somatic yoga is, how it supports emotional healing and trauma release, and what you can expect from my latest Gentle Somatic Yoga for Emotional Release class.

What Is Somatic Yoga?
Somatic yoga is a gentle, body-based movement practice that invites you to slow down, tune inward, and move with awareness. The word “somatic” comes from the Greek soma, meaning “living body.” It’s all about reconnecting with your body from the inside out.
Unlike traditional yoga, which often focuses on external alignment or fitness, somatic yoga emphasizes inner sensation, nervous system regulation, and emotional presence. It’s not about doing the pose perfectly—it’s about feeling your body, honoring your boundaries, and moving in ways that support healing.
Somatic yoga blends movement, breathwork, mindfulness, and nervous system practices to create space for stored emotions, tension, and trauma to surface and gently release.
How Somatic Yoga Supports Emotional and Trauma Healing
When we experience trauma—whether from stress, loss, overwhelm, or past experiences—our bodies often hold onto it.
Tension settles into muscles.
The breath becomes shallow.
The nervous system stays stuck in fight, flight, or freeze.
Somatic yoga works by:
- Inviting safety and grounding through slow, intentional movement
- Activating the parasympathetic nervous system (your rest-and-digest state)
- Encouraging emotional release through embodied expression
- Restoring connection between body, mind, and breath
- Bringing you back to the present moment with kindness and curiosity
It’s gentle enough for beginners and deeply powerful for anyone navigating emotional healing, trauma, or burnout.
What’s Inside This Gentle Somatic Yoga Class?
This practice begins lying down, so you can soften into the support of the earth and start by reconnecting with your breath.
Here’s a brief look at what’s included:

- Breath Awareness (lying down): Helps you ground, slow down, and create a sense of inner safety.
- Windshield Wiper Knees: A gentle hip and pelvic release to melt stored stress and create fluidity.
- Supine Twist: Supports the spine and digestive system while encouraging emotional release through the midsection.
- Somatic Cat-Cow: A fluid, intuitive movement to unwind the spine and reconnect with natural rhythm.
- Child’s Pose: A posture of surrender and grounding, helping the nervous system feel safe.
- Seated Spirals & Dancing Arms: Encourages expression, creativity, and release through upper body movement and somatic spirals.
- Seated Shaking: A trauma-informed technique to release residual stress from the body and return to stillness with more space and presence.
Each movement is done slowly, with options and invitations—not instructions—so you can move in a way that truly honors where your body is today.
